The HPS Study Environment

Studying in Saint-Etienne

Saint-Etienne is a particularly attractive city for students because it offers a wide range of services and activities, a dynamic student life, while remaining particularly inexpensive and easy-going, and also because of its beautiful surroundings and strategic location in the heart of France.

A city for Students

Saint Etienne is a mid-sized city with over 26 000 students, about 15 % of the city’s population! And nearly 3000 of them are international students. Compared to other French university cities, the cost of living in Saint-Etienne is low, finding lodging is fairly easy, and yet Saint-Etienne is a big enough city to offer a great variety of leisure, cultural and sports activities.

Close to Nature

Saint-Etienne borders on the Pilat Mountains (15-20 min) and the Pilat regional natural park - a beautiful place for outdoor sports enthusiasts to hike, run, bike or climb, and even do cross-country skiing or snow-shoeing in the winter.
Saint-Etienne is also very near the Loire River gorges, another beautiful nature reserve, and the Saint-Victor waterfront.

Ideal location in the heart of France

Saint-Etienne is also only 45 minutes from Lyon, and less 3 hours from Paris by TGV or the Northern Alps and the Mediterranean coast by train or car.

Jean Monnet University

University Jean Monnet (UJM) is a dynamic, mid-sized, university with over 20 000 students, including over 10% of international or exchange students from all over the world. The university prides itself on the quality of student life and the student services it provides: quality sports facilities with access to over 50 sports activities, student healthcare services, student life events and cultural services, a network of university media centres fully integrated with the city’s library network....

UJM is a multidisciplinary university with degree and research programmes in a wide range of fields, but which is particularly recognized for its outstanding programmes and expertise in certain specific fields, including sports sciences. The University has recently created a Graduate School on Physical Activity, Training and Health in Sports sciences (G.S. PATHS) to promote our degree programmes, research and continuing education in this particular area, building on a history of collaboration between UJM’s Faculty of Medicine and the Sports Sciences department at the Faculty of Sciences.

The HPS master
learning environment

Expert-Led Education in Sports and Exercise Sciences

The HPS master programme is implemented for the most part by academicians of the Sports and Exercise Sciences department at UJM, including specialists of topics such as Biomechanics, Exercise Physiology, adapted physical activity, Fatigue and sleep, Sports performance and optimised training, Injury prevention. Some classes may be given by collaborators from other universities, or the university Hospital of Saint-Etienne. Most of the teaching staff are affiliated with the Inter-university Laboratory of Human Movement Biology.

State-of-the-Art Facilities at Métare Campus

A large part of the classes will take place on the Métare Campus in Saint-Etienne, on the edge of the Pilat Mountains Regional Park, in the Sports and Exercise Sciences department. The department totals nearly 1000 enrolled students at undergraduate and graduate levels, and is well equipped with learning labs and monitoring gear to conduct studies in physiology or practice various sports.

Learning at IRMIS Research Platforms

Other classes are taught at the Regional Institut of Sports Medecine & Engineering (Institut Régional de Médecine et d’Ingénierie du Sport - IRMIS), on the Health Campus of Jean Monnet University, just next to the Medical School and the University Hospital, where students will discover and learn to use a wide range of equipment in IRMIS Research platforms:

Functional explorations lab

Pulmonary and cardiovascular functions, spirometry, lung capacity and oxygen uptake, gas exchange and substrates utilisation analysis, hypoxia and hyperoxia simulation blood lactate, electrocardiography…

Biomechanics and movement analysis lab

Sprint force, treadmill and overground sprint velocity, ground forceplate measurements, instrumented treadmills, 22-camera 3-D kinematics lab, wireless muscle activity monitoring, 3-D cycling and running patterns assessments…

Neurophysiology lab
