About the course

The objective of this course is to help students better understand how “science” community can contribute to their sport science project. Based on an initial presentation of the students’ individual project, the courses will allow them to actively connect with scholars, or reference professionals related to their project, and discuss their own individual project and share experience with the course coordinator. This course relies on students own, unsupervised work, with the three courses (start, middle and end of semester) aiming at both assessing the students progresses and giving them more tools/advice to feed their project in the field of sport science.

Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

  • Better understand the scientific and academic world, the associated networks and how to use network strategies to their sport-science project
  • Use global and scientific social networks to find/manage contacts and opportunities to feed your professional project in terms of scientific knowledge, experience, internships and working positions
  • Better understand the academic pathways towards research in sport science, and the scientific papers edition process
  • In class: three main course sessions are organized in the first week of the semester, mid-semester and at the end of the semester (about 6 weeks apart). During all three sessions, students will present and discuss their professional project and be guided around how “science”, i.e. the scientific community and networks, can contribute to this project.
  • During class #2, a specific focus will be done around social network and their use to get information “in” and “out” and feed the professional projects.
  • During class #3, a specific focus will be done around the academic careers and the “publication game”.
  • Personal, unsupervised work: the students will have to develop their network and find opportunities for internship, jobs and ways to develop their own network. Among the possible actions, they will have to connect and, if possible, meet directly with scholars or other sport science professionals around their project, attend conferences, workshops or scientific events during the semester.
  • Exam #1 (mid-semester): oral presentation of the works done in the first half of the semester and detailed actions undertaken to feed the student’s project.
  • Exam #2 (end of the semester): oral presentation and infographic slides analyzing the current state of the professional project, compared to the initial project presented during the first class. The quantity and quality of actions undertaken during the semester will also be assessed.
