How to apply?

Application Process

To apply, you must complete and sign the HPS application form (download link below) which includes a 1-page presentation of your motivations to take the HPS master programme et your career goals. You will also need to attach  documents with your application, which are listed here in the "Required Documents" box.

Be sure to carefully read all the instructions (this page, all the way to the bottom) before applying.

N.B. : you do not need to provide any proof of your level in French, but if you do know it, you can report your level in the application form.

Required documents

A short personal resume in English: A curriculum vitae limited to 2 pages

A colour scan of a valid passport (or photo ID for EU citizens)

A scan of your highest degree: provide a complete colour scan of the original degree document, and transcripts for that degree, for a degree in a field relevant to HPS.

If the above-mentioned “highest degree” is not a master degree, also provide proof of enrolment in the first year of an appropriate master degree programme, and first-semester transcripts for this first-year of master. 

Language skills: provide EITHER a certificate of an English language proficiency test result (see recognised tests below) OR, if you have accomplished your higher education studies in English, provide an official letter from the institution, attesting that you have attended and successfully completed their degree programme taught in English.

Application Timeline

Late April

The HPS selection committee will rank all applications and classify candidates as "admitted", "waiting list", or "not admitted"; applicants should please wait to be informed of selection outcome by email.

First part of May

Accepted candidates will be given 10 days to confirm their engagement to enrol in HPS; those who decline will free a seat for students on the waiting list, so as to stabilize the list of incoming HPS students.

End May

Initiate Visa application and the pre-enrolment process.

We recommend that you quickly identify and request any document that will require third party assistance, such as transcripts or a letter of reference, in order to not delay your application

Recognised Tests of Proficiency in English

Compliant with the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR):
International English Language Testing System (IELTS)

Assesses listening, reading, writing, and speaking skills, with scores corresponding to CEFR levels.

Educational Test Service – ETS Global tests

Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL iBT or TOEFL Essentials) or eventually the TOEIC 4-skills test (professional English)

Cambridge English Qualifications

Tests by CEFR levels: mainly B2 First (FCE) or higher (C1 Advanced, C2 Proficiency), or the Linguaskill multi-level test.

Trinity College London's Integrated Skills in English (ISE)

Either the Digital or paper version.

EF-Set certificates

The 4-skills 90 minute test

International English Test (UK)

The 4-skills Certificate test

The European Language Certificates

TELC complete B2 level test (or higher C1 & C2 levels)

Application Languages and Translations

Application documents must be in English or in French. All documents that are not in English or French  (e.g.: transcripts, diplomas…) must be translated into English. We do not require an official, stamped translation. You can do the translation yourself, for example using an online translator or AI. However, you are responsible for the translation, and you must attach a sworn statement at the bottom of the translation.

Sworn Statement

I the undersigned <your full name> hereby declare that the above translation <translated title> of the original document <original title in original language> in <language name> was made by myself using the following tools <website URL and/or software name> and that this translation is conform to the original to the best of my knowledge. I understand that any voluntarily false or misleading translation or fake document in my application is grounds for exclusion from the HPS Master programme.

Submitting your application

Submit your application with all required attachments by email at masterhps@univ-st-etienne.fr.

Please submit complete applications with all the required documents in one transfer; use a large file transfer service if necessary.

Incomplete submissions and resubmitting with updated files are to be avoided. If you have already submitted and wish to update your file, contact us first please.
